IT in Business Growth - API's and RESTful services ~ Scott Andrew Alpaugh

If you're looking for a way to grow your business, you might want to consider using APIs and REST services. APIs are application programming interfaces that allow you to communicate with other software or websites. REST services are a type of API that use HTTP methods to perform operations on data. Together, they can help you access valuable information, automate tasks, integrate with other platforms, and create new products or features.

For example, let's say you run an online store that sells books. You could use an API to get book reviews from a third-party website and display them on your own site. This would increase your credibility and attract more customers. You could also use a REST service to create a personalized recommendation system based on the user's browsing history and preferences. This would increase your conversion rate and customer loyalty.

But how do you use APIs and REST services? Well, you need to have some basic knowledge of web development and programming languages. You also need to find the right APIs and REST services for your needs. There are many websites that offer free or paid APIs and REST services for various purposes. Some examples are Google Books API, Amazon Product Advertising API, Twitter API, and Stripe API.

To use an API or a REST service, you need to make a request to its endpoint, which is a URL that specifies the resource and the action you want to perform. You also need to provide some parameters, such as your API key, the query, the format, and the filters. The API or the REST service will then return a response in the form of data, usually in JSON or XML format. You can then parse the data and use it in your own application.

Using APIs and REST services can be challenging at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll see how powerful and useful they are. They can help you save time, money, and resources, as well as create new opportunities for your business. So don't hesitate to explore the world of APIs and REST services and see what they can do for you!

One of the tools I use extensively is Postman.  You can search for it if you'd like to get it.

Postman is a tool that allows developers to create, run and test API requests in a user-friendly interface. Postman can help with API development, debugging, documentation and automation. Postman supports various features such as variables, environments, collections, tests, mock servers and monitors. Postman tests are scripts that can be added to API requests to verify the response data, status codes, headers and performance. Postman tests can be written in JavaScript and can use built-in libraries such as Chai for assertions. Postman tests can also be run in batches using the Collection Runner or the command-line tool Newman.

Even if you aren't a programmer per se , don't be afraid to dive in and try some of these technologies that I blog about!

Cheers and thanks for your time!
